If you want to learn how to get the perfect wildlife picture and begin to understand some of the basics of photography composition and techniques then this is the course for you!
The day will begin with an introductory session inside, before heading out onto the reserve to put your skills into practice.
During the course your professional tutor David Broadbent will cover:
- How to use shutter speeds to capture action and movement
- Understand apertures and how to control the depth of field
- How to achieve the correct exposure in different lighting
- The importance of image composition
- How to add impact to your images
This course is suitable for beginners and tuition will be tailored to suit individual requirements. Due to small course numbers there will be plenty of time for 1-2-1 tuition

Explore your artistic side with the amazing palette of autumn colours in the wetlands - both forest and flora. And discover the fantastic light, fungi, fruits and feathers.
Explore and photograph the autumnal extravaganza in the wetlands with practical guidance and tuition from wildlife photography tutor, David Broadbent. Learn about your camera settings, effective composition for impactful images, plus how to capture seasonal specialities of the reserve.

Experience the main ground floor rooms of Sir Peter Scott’s family home, now the Scott House Museum. Experience the family home, little changed since it was built in 1953, and discover Sir Peter’s achievements as a conservationist, painter and sportsman.
The visit culminates in a trip to the studio, recognisable from the early BBC natural history television series Look, which allows you unprecedented views of the Rushy Lake.

Meeting point: Slimbridge main foyer
Between 1.30-3.30pm go on a walk with a difference and find out why Sir Peter Scott chose Slimbridge to be the birthplace of modern conservation. Learn about the UK’s last working duck decoy, see where Scott made his home on the edge of the Rushy and follow in his footsteps out towards the estuary in search of our seasonal wildlife.
At 3.30pm head back to the Kingfisher Kitchen to enjoy a delicious cream tea, with homemade scones topped with clotted cream, jam and a choice of tea or coffee.
Cost: £15 per person (for walk and cream tea, if you would like to visit Slimbridge prior to the event please purchase admission separately).

Explore his remarkable artistic career through some of his most significant paintings, and other mediums of his art, as well as the works of other artists which makes this one of the most impressive private collections of wildlife art in the country.
Peter Scott was a remarkable man who led an extraordinary life. Conservationist, scientist, broadcaster, writer, sportsman, Olympian, artist; in any one of his chosen fields he would have been remembered as someone who made a difference.
Of all these fields it was art that was the most important to him and occupied him most directly throughout his life.
He made his living from his art, sold numerous paintings during his lifetime, used his artistic skills in support of his scientific and conservation work and created a remarkable body of natural history painting.
About the tour:
- Find out how Sir Peter Scott began his lifelong passion with art.
- Take a tour of Scott House bursting at the seams with his personal belongings – from rarely seen drawings usually kept in our archive to the tools he used to compose his artworks.
- Experience the inspiring views from Sir Peter Scott’s studio over his beloved lake – the Rushy Pen.
- Explore the 1950s home full of Scott artwork and other artists he chose to hang on the walls of their home.
- Hear about how notebook drawings from his worldwide travels created one of the most important collections of scientific wildlife illustration of the 20th century.

The Art Discovery tours will replace the standard Scott House Museum tours on Tuesdays wherever possible. The standard tours will continue to be available on other days of the week.

Our Improvers Birdwatching Morning sessions will enable you to develop and refine your birding skills.
Get help identifying and ageing a variety of species including waders, ducks and passerines.
Learn how to use weather conditions and habitat to get more from your birding.

Get to grips with bird identification with the help of one of our experienced reserve wardens. Join them to complete the morning visits to the bird hides to see what birds are around and get help identifying a variety of species including waders, ducks and passerines. Followed by a breakfast roll in the Kingfisher Kitchen.

Twilight SENS sessions: Friday 17, Saturday 18 and Friday 24 October at 5.30pm and 5.45pm.
These sessions are specifically designed to be more accessible and comfortable for individuals who may be sensitive to intense sensory experiences. The key differences in these sessions include:
- Twilight Timing - take place before it gets too dark, during twilight, so the lighting is softer and less overwhelming.
- The background music played throughout the trail is toned down to a lower volume and the actors involved in the event will adopt a more relaxed approach.
